Yet another one of our Nokia Asha tutorials where we help users in getting more out of their phones. This time it’s about the Camera Sounds of Nokia Asha 501 which cannot be turned off in many regions (most of the Asian countries). The reason is simple – Local Laws and Regulations don’t allow silent capturing of others. These restrictions are made in order to make sure people don’t spy on other persons by clicking them without their knowledge.
Turning Off the Camera Sounds in Asha 501
To turn off the camera sounds, we’ll make use of a backup file which will help in over-writing the config files and hence make the Camera Sounds toggle working.
- Backup your important data such as Contacts, Calendar and Messages as the backup file will replace that completely leaving no scope of recovery.
- If you resent your phone or restore an earlier backup, the setting will be overwritten and the toggle will once again be disabled.
- In some rare cases, the phone might stop responding and will need a software re-flashing. So try only if you’re ready to risk.
- Download the Backup File (dubbed backup_30-08-2013-16_43.mbk)Â from here.
- Copy it to Asha 501> Memory Card> My Backups.
- Pick up the Phone and open Settings> Backup.
- Now tap on Restore from backup.
- Choose the newly copied backup file (backup_30-08-2013-14_42.mbk) and proceed with the restore.
- After successful restore the phone will restart. Don’t worry if it takes a while to turn on after the Nokia logo.
- Whoa! If everything went well, the Camera Sounds toggle will start working and you’ll be able to turn off the camera shutter sounds.

Thanks a lot!! it works.. Even the Nokia website did not have a solution for this.
That’s because they themselves disabled this option 😛
I am behind office firewall and is not allowing me to go to the site where I can download the file for Asha 501. kindly email to me thru securityconsultancy at gmail dot com. ty
Sorry. I don’t know why box should be blocked. I’ll see if I’m able to send it via an Email.
it’s work for single sim or dual sim?
or both of them?
Tried on dual. BUt think it’ll work on both 🙂
hi,
I figured out what you did to get this working. You first made a backup. Then you opened the mbk with SQLlite browser(maybe) or something else, then u disbaled ForceShutter lock or something.. Am I right?
And can this method work to change the homescreen wallpaper to your choice too?
Nice guess.. But well No. Instead of all that mess, I just created this backup on a phone from another country where the toggle is working 😉
GREAT!!!!!thanks a lot,,,,it worked for me…
Coool 🙂 Thanks for the update.
It worked perfectly. Pls tell how dis you took those screnshoots
There’s no way to take screenshots of Asha 501 yet.
If i restrore the factory settings of my phone does the off option will be toggable?
No. When i tried, it got reset to the default.
Thanks for the reply and for the info you’ve shared. But there’s a slight problem. You see, if I reboot (turn off/turn on) my phone the bluetooth is always turned on. This happened after applying this backup of yours.
Thank you for the help 🙂

it worked! and I’m damn happy about it! thanks a lot for the tips! highly appreciate it! 🙂
The file name was not “my backups” though, but it’s just “Backups”,
At first I was confused on how to get the folder because it didn’t exist in my memory card, but then I realized that I need to create back up first, then the “Backups” folder will be created in my memory card..
I just bought it today and you’ve made me a happy user already! hehe..
Oh yeah 😀 Sorry for that incorrect folder name will improve on that.
Thanks for the comment dear. This really gives the energy to explore and write more. Enjoy the Nokia (Microsoft) Asha 501 🙂
