You do not need to pay the full cost of the device upfront. Instead, you are charged a monthly bill which varies as per the actual cost of the handset. It is similar to purchasing the phone on EMI, however, instead of paying the interest, you subscribe to a monthly postpaid plan which gives you calling & data benefits.
The business model is similar (not identical) to the phones offered on carrier contract in US & other countries. Sure, you can have the phone cheaper if you pay the full amount upfront. The current market price of Nokia 6.1 is 16,999 for the 3GB RAM variant. The 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant costs Rs. 18,999. Airtel is offering these phones at the price of Rs. 3,799 and 5,799. The rest of the device cost + usage charges are distributed evenly into the Rs. 1,499 monthly plan for 12 months.

The offer is available to both prepaid and postpaid customers of Airtel. The condition, however, is that Prepaid customers should switch to postpaid plan while availing the smartphone financing.
