Enable or disable VoLTE & VoWiFi in Nokia Android phones (6, 5 & 3)

Nokia’s new Android phones support VoLTE and VoWiFi services. The services are dependent on your cellular operator. So, if your operator supports VoLTE or VoWiFi, then you can use them on your Nokia Android smartphone. The option to enable these advanced voice services are available in the settings of the Nokia smartphones. Follow this guide for further details.

Turn on VoLTE in Nokia Android phones – 6, 5 and 3

The international variant of Nokia 6, Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 have VoLTE (Voice over LTE) enabled by default. If you’re very sure that your operator supports VoLTE, then you can cross check the VoLTE settings to confirm that it is enabled on your phone. Here’s how:

  1. Open “Settings” on your Nokia smartphone.
  2. Tap on “SIM cards” to open the SIM and network settings menu.
  3. Further tap on the SIM card (1 or 2) which you use as your data SIM. This will open the “Cellular network settings menu”.
If you have the single SIM variant, then you can skip this step.

  4. Turn on the toggle in front of “Enhanced 4G LTE Mode”.

Info: VoLTE is enabled when the toggle is set to On. Turning it Off will still keep 4G enabled on your phone, but you will not be able to make HD voice calls. Some operators (such as Jio in India) strictly rely on VoLTE

Some operators (such as Jio in India) strictly rely on VoLTE to make calls. In such a case, please make sure that VoLTE is enabled; else you will not be able to make calls or send text messages.

Turn on VoWiFi (WiFi Calling) in Nokia Android Phones

The usage of VoWiFi (Voice over WiFi) is still very limited. Only a handful of operators supports the service. So, you can only use it if your operator provides WiFi calling facility. Here’s how to enable VoWiFi on the Nokia 6, Nokia 5 or the Nokia 3.

  1. Open “Settings” on your phone. You can do that via all apps or by clicking on the gear icon beside the quick toggles.
  2. Under “Wireless and networks”, tap on “More”. This will open additional network settings window called Wireless and networks.
  3. You will see a settings entry called “Wi-Fi calling”. Choose your calling preference here.

Nokia Android phones prefer cellular calls by default. You can change the setting to match your requirements.

Conclusion

You should have working VoLTE and WoWiFi in your Nokia Android phones by following the above steps. In case VoLTE still does not work, then you can get in touch with your operator for assistance. Please keep in mind that for VoLTE to work, the particular SIM needs to be your active data SIM as well. You can also consider doing a factory reset if nothing else helps.

  • This setting is not available in my Nokia 3 TA-1032. Do I need to install a kind of patch to make it available? If yes, where I can get it.

    • Hi, the setting is dependent on your operator as well. Unless they approve your device and provision the VoLTE and VoWiFi services for your device, the option will not show up.

      • I use Smartfren (Indonesia) and this operator support volte and run well when I use Samsung, but I can’t make it work using nokia 3 TA-1032. Is there any solution to make my Nokia 3 support this? May be by installing a patch or something

  • Currently I brought new Nokia 3:2 android 9 version, I am trying to connect WiFi but not able to connect. It’s showing disable as well as blue tooth is also not connecting. Why I facing this issue. I regreted for buying this phone.

  • I have Nokia 6 and till last year I was able to make calls from Jio Network on WiFi as well. Then, there was an upgrade and now, if I switch on WiFi, the VOLTE doesn’t function and my SIM is effectively switched off. So, if I have to use WiFi on mobile, I have to sacrifice my calls. What shall i do? Sandeep

    • That’s rather strange. This is not an expected behavior and I think you should visit a Nokia Mobile Care center for assistance.

  • Hello, what type of android You have? I have Nokia 6 with android 7.1.2 nougat. IT does not have the options You refer. Enhanced 4g lte mode & wifi calling are missing from menu 🙁 😲

    • The features are enabled/disabled based on the region you are in. These were taken from the Nokia 6 US edition.

    • Have you enabled the VoLTE option in phone’s settings? Also ensure that you are running the latest version of system software on your phone.

  • i have just got nokia 5 and need wifi calling telstra is has wifi calling, why can i not see any of your options you have posted???

  • What about Nokia 8?
This was supposed to be the flagship edition, but I cannot see the WIFI Calling option 🙁

    • I am not 100% sure, but the option should be enabled for the regions where VoWiFi is used. For example, on a Nokia 6, it is not enabled in India, but it is enabled for the Nokia 6 sold in the US market. So, the regional differences are there 🙂
