Tumblr is world’s #30 most accessed website (according to Alexa) and is being used by a variety of people. While some use it to share their views and ideas, others make use of Tumblr to showcase their talent in front of others. A lot of times we come across some nice songs or audio notes which are directly uploaded to Tumblr with no download link available. If you’re looking to download any such audio file off Tumblr blogs, this post is for you.
Download Music from Tumblr Using Chrome or Firefox
Downloading audio from Tumblr is an easy job if we make use of the Developer Options built into modern browsers. If you’re using Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox on your PC, just follow the steps below to download the required audio from Tumblr and play it offline whenever you want.
- Open Chrome or Firefox and browse the Tumblr blog page where the audio is uploaded and wait for the page to fully load.
- Click the Play button
- Right click on the Audio Player and Choose Inspect Element.
- Look for HTML section looking like <audio preload=”auto”>. In our example, the exact HTML section was:

- Paste the copied source URL in a new browser window or tab and click on go.
- The file should start downloading automatically. If it does not and instead starts playing within the browser, right click on the Player and choose Save video as.. (Chrome) or Save Audio As.. (Firefox).
- That’s all you were needed to do. Enjoy your audio offline.

The Alternate Way (Easier, but might not work everytime)
- Open Chrome or Firefox and browse the Tumblr blog page where the audio is uploaded and wait for the page to fully load.
- Open Developer Console by pressing the F12 key on your keyboard or by Right clicking anywhere on the page and choosing Inspect Element.
- Switch to the Network tab and if there are requests still loading, wait for a while for all of them to finish loading.
- Click on the Play button on the Tumblr webpage and notice the new URL for audio file appearing in the Network tab.
Click image to enlarge - Right-click on it and choose Open Link in New tab.
- Switch to the newly opened tab and right click on the audio player and choose Save video as.. (Chrome) or Save Audio As.. (Firefox).
- Wait for the download to finish and enjoy your audio offline.

I’ve ran into some problem with the audiofiles, i was able to get a video couple days ago without any problem, but with only audiofiles i’m having major issues. I dont know if there is somekind of protection on the audio file or something but it just keeps showing me either bunch of code or giving me this tumblr page saying “request is denied.”

I’m not really sure, i tried to follow the instructions above but i just couldnt get it to work. I tried both but neither worked for me. First it just gave me errors and bunch of nonsense text (no audiofile links) and the second one just wouldnt have the audio file appear at all.

Hi this was my go-to method as well for dl audio from tumblr but now it seems to not work anymore, i think tumblr updated its coding and now doesn’t provide a separate audio link in its elements and doesn’t show anything in the network section either. Tumblr has started preloading the audio file. So the process will now be slightly different. I’ll try to update the post to present as easily as possible. Will also drop a video. Probably by EOD.

hello I’ve been using this method on chrome for awhile now, but it doesn’t seem to be working anymore so I tried the Network method, but no link pops up for the audio player. There is a link with the word “audio_file” that appears in the network section, but it doesn’t download as an audio but rather than as a link.. hope this makes sense, and I hope it all works again! thank you !!

BTW, this only works for native Tumblr uploads. In case the file is a Flash embed, it probably won’t download this way.
I figured it out… 🙂 the network loading was taking forever so I searched for “audio” in the inspector section and “audio source” came up so I thought I’d give that a try… saw a link under audio source so I copied the link and posted it in a new tab and it works!
I hope they don’t change it again. In the link actually says “please-dont-download-this-or-our-lawyers-wont-let-us-host-audio” at the end but it still works

How do you do this on a Mac?
If you have chrome installed, the process should be the same.
well there is no right clicking on a Mac, so …
If you’re using a macbook you can 2 finger click. If that’s not turned on just go into system preferences > trackpad > secondary click
if you’re using a mouse go into system preferences > mouse > and there should be an option for right clicking.

Shouldn’t be. You get the same audio file as what plays in the player. So if the player itself is loading a poor quality file, nothing can be done.

What if a want to download through my cell phone, the phone keypad doesn’t have F12 key ofc. Can you help with that?
I just add “dl” in front of tumblr in the url so that i reads blogname.dltumblr.com/whatever-the-page-is-called and press enter and it goes to TubeNinja where I can select what quality I want the video/audio in =)

hey so, I’m having some difficulties with both methods here
method #1, I would open the link in a new tab and it would render as a blank player, no audio to be found in it. Eventually, the network tab would cease to render the audio file in the drop-down menu despite many reloads.
with method #2, it looks like Tumblr (or my version of Firefox, either/or) shortened the audio source URL in a very particular spot (it gave me “https://www.tumblr.com/audio_file/lexelectrometal/1261165747…06052cd0c6551”). Can’t even find the play_key portion anymore.
Is there any way to expand the URL?

I used the same method as mentioned in the post. If the URL seems getting shortened in 2nd method, you just Right click on the portion and select Edit HTML to view it as a whole.

The first one worked for me, but the audio link didn’t show up as a .mp3 so it took me a long time :/ the link is really long too.
When you use the first way and open the new tab, the url literally says “please-dont-download-this-or-our-lawyers-wont-let-us-host-audio” That’s kind of horrible, but it’s probably because so many people do it and it works!

i used to use this but i think they’ve changed their coding and now there isn’t an “audio type = audio/mp3” etc and it doesn’t work. let me know if you figure out anything else!
Tried it and it is still there. Maybe you’re looking at an embedded audio from some other site. BTW, I updated the post a few days back with an alternate and kinda easier procedure. Have you tried that?
Reblog the post, click on the person icon, then the blog you reblogged it to. Find the audio post and there’ll be a download button on the bottom next to the reblog button, settings, etc. When you click it, an ausio page opens. You can click save as and get it from there.

It’s actually easier on Android mobile, no idea about iOS though. Firstly install a download manager (I use ES File Manager on Android) and the tumblr app.
Then just open any tumblr blog post and tap on the 3 dots (options menu) near the footer of the post. From there, choose Open in App. That’s it. When the app opens, tap the play button and choose your download manager and it will start saving the audio. That’s it :p

once you find the mp3 file you dont need to copy the link into a new tab, just right click on the audio file directly from the networks tab, and then “open in new tab”
ive also found it helps when you sort by size, and when you click inspect element BEFORE you click play. ive been doing this for a long time now and every time i did it while the song was playing, it was cut off. you used to be able to do it directly from the dashboard, but it seems you cant now. probably one of their stupid html code edits.

If you use Chrome, after you copy the source into a new tab right-click and select “Save video as…”. You have to right-click on the grey box for that option to show up.

It is as much illegal as is downloading commercial song albums/MP3 from other sites. As much illegal as downloading YouTube videos is. I recommend not selling them or passing them on. Save for yourself.

Hello! I’ve been successful in downloading tumblr mp3s before, but I tried this time and to no avail D:
It keeps saying “access is denied” even though I’ve put in the entire ?play_key code.

If you have a tablet, it’s even easier. Trying to play an audio post on one will pull it up in a new tab that’s just the mp3 link, and saving that link on a computer will download the file.

Still works fine. Are you sure you included the random access details i.e the digits after ?play_key. Unless you include them, you won’t get the access.

Would be good if you install Chrome or Firefox on your Mac or iPhone. I tried Safari, but couldn’t find an easy way to directly download a MP3 :/
