Customize the navigation key light & vibration on Nokia 8, 6, 5 & 3

Nokia Android phones run stock (pure Android). That makes a bunch of things different as compared to an Android phone which runs a customized version of Android. By default, the navigation (capacitive) buttons for back and recent apps light up when you use your Nokia smartphone. They stay lit as you keep tapping the screen or when you press one of the buttons.

The light can be annoying for some of the users while using the phone in the dark. Hence, there is a way to customize it to make the keys only light up when a key is pressed. You can also extend the duration of the light or keep them always on. Lastly, you can also enable or disable the vibration when the navigation key is pressed. Let’s learn how.

Applies to: Nokia 8, Nokia 6, Nokia 5, Nokia 3, Mi A1 and other devices running stock Android.

Don’t light up the keys when the screen is tapped or phone is flipped

The navigation keys light up every time you tap on the screen or flip the phone. If that doesn’t suit you, then you can easily turn it off. Here’s how:

Note: Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Mi A1 do not have navigation keys with backlight. So, you cannot turn the same On or Off on these devices.

  1. Open Settings and select Display.
  2. Scroll down and select Navigation key light.

  3. Uncheck the box next to “Keep light up while tap or flip”.

That’s it. Once you uncheck the box, you will notice that the navigation keys don’t light up when you tap on the screen. Now you can type on the keyboard and play games without the light from the keys distracting you.

Extend the navigation key backlight timeout

You can also control the duration for which the navigation keys should stay lit up. The minimum setting possible is 2 seconds and the maximum goes to ‘Always On’. So, if you have problems locating the keys in the dark, then you can keep the keys backlight to always on. Here’s how.

Note: Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Mi A1 do not have navigation keys with backlight. So, you cannot turn the same On or Off on these devices.

  1. Open Settings > Display.
  2. Scroll down and select Navigation key light.
  3. Here, tap on Navigation key light duration and choose your intended duration. There are 5 options – 2 seconds, 4 seconds, 6 seconds, 8 seconds and Always on.

The backlight will immediately start lighting for the longer duration or ‘Always on’ as per your choice.

Disable/enable vibration (haptic feedback) for the navigation keys

Nokia Android phones vibrate when you tap on one of the navigation keys. This haptic feedback helps in knowing that the press is registered by the phone. However, if you do not like the vibration, then you can turn it off in a few steps. Here’s how:

  1. Open Settings on your Nokia smartphone.
  2. Scroll down and choose “Sound” under Device sub-category.
  3. Tap on “Other sounds” at the end of the list.

    Sound Settings
  4. Disable the toggle in front of “Vibrate on tap”.
Other Sounds > Sound Settings in Nokia 6

Try hitting the back key now and you’ll notice that there is no vibration anymore. Similarly, you can enable the toggle if you wish to have the keys vibrate.

  • You can also go to accessibility > vibration > touch vibration > off or on
I think this is available to android pie settings

  • I have disabled the toggle in front of VIBRATE ON TAP but it is still vibrating while typing this message.

    • Hi Vineet, that’s for the navigation keys. Are you trying to disable the keyboard vibration?

    • Hi Saeid, you can also change the wallpaper in the following manner:
Tap and hold on any blank area on your homescreen, then choose Wallpaper.
Alternatively, use the search option in the Settings app to find wallpaper. It will be shown in the results, just select it and set the wallpaper as you like.

    • You should be able to make the change from Settings > Gestures. Else from the quick toggles available under the notifications bar.

  • It would be great if I was able to change the back button from the bottom left to bottom right on the Nokia 6, most annoying not being able to customise.

    • Guess that’s because the function is printed on the button. So it will look strange if the button functions different than what’s drawn on it. I can do that on my Nokia 7, which has on-screen buttons.

  • Hi, I have question. Does this also disable vibration on the central home button as well or just the two lit up buttons on the left and right of the home button?

    • It does disable the vibration for all. However the home (middle) button will still vibrate during an unlock using the fingerprint scanner.

  • I have a Nokia 8 and when my phone is on silent it still vibrates when a get a message or a call. How do I turn this off?

    • That’s because there’s no backlight under the navigation keys on Nokia 3 and Nokia 5. The setting is hence unavailable on these devices.

  • navigation buttons do not work on the phone . any idea why ?? is there any place to enable/disable ?
The light glows for these buttons but they do not work. Same is the case with the finger print scanner. Cannot register

    • Most likely a hardware issue it is. You should try performing a factory reset and if it still doesn’t work, then you’ll have to have the phone repaired.
