If you’ve purchased a new pen drive you’ll most probably face the problem of not being able to copy any file larger than 4GB to your pen drive even when the real capacity of the Pen Drive is higher than that. Although you can copy any size of data when its split into multiple files, but when its a single file, the system will display an error of the form like:
File Too Large
The file’ abc.xyz’ is too large for the destination file system.
As the error says, it’s the file system which can’t carry any file of such big size and there’s nothing wrong with the pen drive. This is because the FAT32 partition is not capable of handling any having size higher than 4GB. And usually a pen drive comes formatted with the FAT32 file system.
How to change the File System format of a Pen Drive and copy larger files
To transfer/copy files larger , all you need to do is to change the file system of pen drive from FAT32 to either NTFS or exFAT. To do that, follow these steps:
Note: All data on the pen drive partition will be lost permanently. Don’t forget to backup valuable data before continuing.
- Plug in the pen drive to your PC.
- Copy any important data out ofΒ the pen drive to a place from where you can access it later on.
- Open Computer/My Computer (or whatever your PC is named) and right click on your pen drive’s name.
- Select Format.
- Now in the file system drop down menu, change the format from FAT32 to either NTFS or exFAT.
We’ll recommend exFAT over NTFS, but that might make the drive incompatible with some older systems.
- Check on Quick Format.
- Finally, click on Start.
- Your drive will be formatted and you can now copy files of any size (only up to the total capacity of your pen drive, of course) to your pen drive.
Thank you so much for this information
Thanks a lot
I tried twice with your method. Succeeded in the third attempt. Many thanks for sharing this method.
I have done it through reading your article. Thanks a lot for sharing this info.
Thanks a lot, its working
Can I change it back to fat32 later
Yes, you can re-format it at any point π
you don’t need to reformat. Just use the “convert” command in a cmd window.
for example if pendrive is drive F:
convert F: /fs:ntfs
that’s it, all the files still there.
Thank you that works perfectly
Thanks a lot

Formatting the pen-drive to NTFS file format works in most case. If it doesn’t like in my case. I installed GS Richcopy 360 after I saw it being recommended on many blogs. So it kinda helped me a lot. Solved most of my file transfer error. Its by Guru Squad.. Devs did a really good job in creating the product.

exactly.. u can use the same format but u just need to “Change allocation unit size” from 4gb (the size that u can’t copy to your pendrive) to more than that (like 8gb or more) then it’s done… now you can copy more than 4gb file ……

in my system not show NTFS what can i do suggest me plzz
Hey dude .Its not necessary to be so troublesome, all you need is just a “MINITOOL partition wizard”,it could convert any drive optionally with few clicks, and the point is its totally free!
Don’t know what was troublesome in the article.
My pen drive is sandisc otg large file copy error
Ur solution tried NTFS after solved problem but after connecting android device displayed notifications damaged pen drive.
PC connected working better
Some Android phones do not support the NTFS file system. Try formatting as exFAT and see if that works out.
super bro it works thanks for nice idea !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy to help π
Thanks bro its work thank u so muchβ¦..
Glad that it was helpful π
Ohhhhhh Very nice tip………….. thanks a million

You’re welcome, Av π
yes .its working..thanks
It doesn’t work on memory card. Cuz when I format my memory card with ntfs format then it doesn’t work on my android device. Plz help me
Try choosing exFAT then.
I tried it, but the option Ntfs is disabled. Means can’t see there. The pendrive is of scandisk company. Which may not have facility to change fat to NTFS …?
Probably. Besides NTFS, other formats are available either?
But when i plug in the drive and try to format only pulldown it shows is FAT32 only…..nothing else remains in the pulldown…I am using XP…so what we can do?
i erased my all data using format (exFAT) now my sd card doesnot support in windows 8 , i tried in windows 7 too but no use. NOW HOW DO I CHANGE FORMAT TO DEFAULT FAT32 I CANT EVEN FORMAT BECAUSE THERE’S NOTHING IN IT
exFAT is supported by all Windows versions since Windows XP (SP2), so seems like a formatting-gone-wrong issue. Can you just have a look at DiskManager (Start> type diskmgmt.msc > Hit Enter) if the drive/card shows there? If it does, format it again using any other format. If it doesn’t, your card reader is having issues or unfortunately your card itself.
Thanks for all the help. Appreciate all the help
OH MY GOD,
I tried a lot to solve it myself but couldnot. Now your solution is pretty straight forward and problem is solved.
