If you have a slow Internet Connection, the new Yahoo Mail would have surely disappointed you. Although it has many good features, the new mail takes a long time to load and still gives timeout errors while sending emails. If you are on a slow connection or if you just wish to switch back to the old Yahoo Mail classic for any other reason, here is the process to follow. There are two ways to switch back to the old (classic) yahoo mail:
Yahoo earlier (last month) forced everyone to update to the new Yahoo! Mail Neo and access to the older version was completely removed. There’s no way to roll back now. This only worked till the update was not forced and users willingly updated to the new version.
You can now use the Mail Basic which works a lot like the depreciated Mail Classic. To access mail basic, read the comment below or click here.
Option 1 – Disabling JavaScript
- Go to your browser options and disable JavaScript from there.
- Now, login to your Yahoo Mail account and you’ll see a message as in the image below.
- Just click on Return to a previous version of Yahoo! Mail.
- You’re done. It will revert to the old Yahoo Mail until you upgrade to new yahoo Mail again.
Option 2 – Reducing Screen Resolution
If you have a system with a much lower screen resolution (such as Mobile Phone) or a system which allows you to reduce your screen resolution to a large extent, you can easily switch back to the old Yahoo Mail.
After reducing your screen resolution, login to your Yahoo Mail account and you’ll see a message like the one in the image below. Just click on Return to a previous version of Yahoo! Mail and you’ll be taken back to the old Yahoo Mail.
Upgrading back to the new Yahoo Mail:
You can upgrade back to the new Yahoo Mail anytime. You just need to click on Newest version of Yahoo Mail in the top right and follow the further instructions as provided.

Clearly I can see a lot of people really struggling with the UI at yahoo.
I myself am prevented from logging in via netscape communicator, yet can login via another more later browser that is not MSIE.
Often I get the same pap that its not firefox, well netscape was mozilla before firefox ever existed.
Like many on this thread, I share the same sentiments.
I deliberately avoid sites, that demand use of javascripting. If I site requires that, and tells me to reconfig my system, I say ball, that shit can’t write a web site, why should I trust his business.
As of recently, https://m.yahoo.com/w/ygo-mail/folders.bp
seems to function as a login with netscape.
most of the communicator functions of messaging and imap access got revoked with the upgrade.
So the service is a problem.
These problems stem principally from code bloat.
Systems ops, doing upgrades, find that new versions of softwares offer more provision, thats seems ok locally, but outside the local domain, it seems things get worse, as comms take place demanding extra bandwidth.
The dumb arse solution, is to cuss people out, by shite coding practices, and that is exactly what has occured with main line yahoo.
I pretty much had it with IT boffs, they are complete muppets, there was no need to do an upgrade to the sys, why did they do that, I will tell you, to drop people off their user base, thats why, because their servers can’t cope with the load of bloat of their local upgrades, and they are too chicken to admit to their bosses their goofs.
Yahoo japan works!
Only if you disable JavaScript in your browser, you will feel the YMail moving quickly. 🙂
Or else use the basic version from the settings :p
THANKS IT WORKS ALOT. AM NOW BACK TO MY OLD MAL. I LOVE IT.
thanks ! i found it … i just notice few disadvantages of basic version
1. the ‘ To’ column do not appear our favourite name , in new version , all name appear when u type the 1st alphabet , but basic dont , it wont appear
2. the advertisement on the right side do not had option to be turned off
3. i cant select the view option , – top part – email headline , bottom part – email contents , in basic version , we just can see all the email headline , when u click on it , it go directly into the contents , meaning u cant view all contents one by one in 1 page
i think yahoo purposely force us to use their new version
thanks ! 🙂
i got it with /b/ , how can i do it permanently ? when i log out and log in it will automatically turn back to
new mail version
how can i select from the mail settings that lead to basic version option as u mentioned ?
profile ? account info ? option ? i cant locate the setting option
If you don’t want to make it a permanent change, better bookmark the /b/ version of the URL.
Else if you wanna make the basic version permanent, open the standard version, click on the gear icon towards the top right portion of the page and choose settings. Now set the mail version to basic
pls guide me how to get basic version … reso , java not working
thanks !
You can try accessing the basic version by adding /b in the url after the /neo (after opening the mail). For example http:// in-mg61.mail.yahoo.com/neo/b/launch in your browser. It might be somewhat helpful. Let’s see.
Else, head to the mail settings and choose to see the Basic Version.
reduce reso dont help !
pls advise me ….
how to change to classic yahoo….
its so wasting time with the new yahoo !
As I’ve updated the post, this method no longer works after Yahoo Upgraded its mail service. You can however use the basic version.
disable java script is not working out any more………………
Because the admin of this website is working, no question very rapidly it
will be well-known, due to its feature contents.
Thanks a lot!
Hi:
I tried lowering the resolution (a lot) as suggested, and it changed nothing in Yahoo mail. I cannot disable Java because it does not appear anywhere in my “options” menu (not even as an option to enable or disable). Any suggestions? This new neo program is a pain in my butt, and is causing a lot of problems!
Hey
Sadly this is not going to work anymore. Yahoo earlier (last month) forced everyone to update to the new Yahoo! Mail Neo and access to the older version was completely removed. There’s no way to roll back now. This only worked till the update was not forced and users willingly updated to the new version.
You can however try accessing the basic version by disabling javascript or by adding /b in the url after the /neo (after opening the mail). For example http:// in-mg61.mail.yahoo.com/neo/b/launch in your browser. It might be somewhat helpful. Let’s see.
