Aakash (Cheapest Tablet) – Specifications and Price

The much awaited world’s cheapest  Tablet PC Aakash has been launched in India. Aakash, which was earlier named Sakshat is completely made in India, though some internal parts have been purchased from Japan, Korea and China. Govt. of India plans  to provide one Aakash Tablet to  every College and High School  student to help reduce digital illiteracy. 500 tablets were distributed among children during the launching ceremony.

Key Features of Aakash:

  1. Aakash runs on Andriod 2.2 (Froyo). Android is a leading Operating System (OS) in the field of SmartPhones.
  2. It has a 7-inch Resistive Touchscreen.
  3. Provides access to thousands of educational & Learning content, created using Sakshat Portal and other websites.
  4. It’ll be preloaded with basic apps like Office Suite, media player, Nimbuzz etc.
  5. The graphic accelerated processor enables Aakash to play HD videos too.

After registering on above website students and teachers can access the digital repository, ebooks, eJournals, forums, eLibrary etc.

Price of Aakash:

The Open Market Price of Aakash will be about $48 (Rs. 2200) . Govt. of India has decided to provide the Tablet to all the students of College and High Schools by Subsidizing it to 50%. So, it will be made available to students for about $24 (Rs. 1100).
In the first phase as pilot project 100,000 devices will be provided.
